Students and alumni are called Terps, short for terrapin, or turtle. UMD's mascot is a bronze statue of a diamondback terrapin, after Testudo the Turtle聽who resided on campus in the 1930s. Students will often rub the statue's beak for luck before exams. Known for its ability to bite off the hands and feet of the unwary, the mascot coined UMD's slogan "Fear the turtle".听
Located just outside Washington, D.C., the campus is a 1,250-acre oasis in suburban College Park. Shuttle buses make it easy to get around the College Park campus, with plenty of eclectic hangouts and cool vibe. Plus, you鈥檒l be a car, bus, or train ride from Annapolis, Baltimore, Philadelphia聽and New York.

Additional Mandatory Fees
The University of Maryland has additional mandatory fees which are outlined on the page. These fees cannot not be waived. the Student Activity Fee and聽SEVIS fee for J-1 Students apply to exchange students.听Incoming students will be required to pay a technology fee to UMD (this is automatically charged to your student account once accepted to UMD).
Financial support
A range of funding for student exchange including scholarships, grants and loans are available to UQ students.
Insurance
Students approved to participate in a Semester-based Exchange are automatically covered by UQ鈥檚 Travel Insurance for the country of their host university only.

If you plan to travel outside of your host country, you should purchase additional insurance.
All exchange students are required to purchase . Exchange students are not eligible to waive this requirement.听All exchange students will be automatically enrolled in the insurance and billed to the student's UMaryland account.
